On May 13, 2010, King County Executive Dow Constantine proposed providing cities with 150 beds in the King County Jail until 2020. This move, coupled with current and potential contracts that north/east King County cities have with other jurisdictions for jail beds, enabled Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn to recommend ending the process of siting a new regional municipal jail to house misdemeanor offenders. NEC Municipal Jail Timeline

The cities are early in the planning process of studying alternative sites and then identifying a preferred site. Decisions regarding which cities will ultimately be partners in a regional jail and the preferred location for the facility are not expected until 2010. There will be many opportunities for the public to learn more about the project and provide comments.

  • December 2008 – Public forums were held for the newly identified sites
    Note: for all of the forums, doors opened at 6 p.m. and the formal program began at 6:30 p.m.
    • Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bertha Knight Landes Room at Seattle City Hall, located at 600 Fourth Ave. (between Cherry and James Streets), Seattle – focus: King County Jail Annex site, Seattle;
    • Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Grand Ballroom at The Hollywood Schoolhouse, located at 14810 N.E. 145th St., Woodinville – focus:  Unincorporated King County site;
    • Thursday, Dec. 11, 2008, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the Main Dining Room of the Pagoda Student Union Building at Shoreline Community College, located at 16101 Greenwood Ave. N., Shoreline – focus: Shoreline site; and
    • Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, from 6 to 9 p.m. on Level 4, Rooms 404 and 405 of The Meydenbauer Center, located at 11100 N.E. Sixth St., Bellevue – focus: Bellevue site.

Note: public forums were already held for the Seattle north site (Armory Way) and the Seattle south site (West Marginal Way) in June and July 2008.

  • January 2009 – Scoping meetings on the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)

  • Second quarter 2010 – Release draft EIS; additional input on the draft EIS
    (public meetings will be held during the second quarter of 2010)
  • Third quarter 2010 – Issue final EIS
  • 2010 – Identify preferred site
  • Once a preferred site is identified, the local legislative body with jurisdiction over the location will begin its decision-making process
